Firepit Dyeing with Alexandra Arellano

(JULY 7) 3:00PM-7:00PM

  • $45-$60
  • Old Orchard Road

Service Description

These classes will cover needed safety and protection in the dye lab, materials needed, how to set-up a proper dye area and different dyeing materials, along with various modalities and techniques which will vary weekly. Natural dyeing is contingent on a number of factors in every dye pot, such as (but not limited to): water pH, temperature, plant matter/organic material, fibers, type of dyeing apparatus implemented and pre/post-wash amendments. Each workshop will dive into various sub-fields in the world of eco-dyeing (i.e. solar dyeing, bundle dyeing, open fire dyeing, dyeing with indigo, etc.). The color and dye palette that will be used in this series will range from wild-harvested, organically and sustainably grown flora and ethically procured sources. The dye pots will reflect the colors that are available to us. The participants are to bring their own natural material/fiber that is able to take the dye (Unless otherwise noted in the class description notes.). Items of natural origin are necessary, in order for the color to adhere. Vintage clothing, textiles, various sorts of wood, yarn, etc. are all great options for exploration in dyeing. Students are encouraged to bring a piece to dye each workshop that is attended. If students do not have something that they are able to dye, there will be a small curated selection of items, fabric(s) and/or fiber(s) available for an additional cost. These items will be offered as a first come, first serve basis and will range in price - according to origin, material and fiber(s). Attendees are encouraged to wear clothing that is conducive to potentially getting dirty or stained - as working with natural dyeing can stain clothing and/or surfaces. (JULY 7) 3:00PM-7:00PM *Class sign-up necessary. Drop-ins are welcome, but attendees need to make sure the class that is scheduled will happen - as minimum student quota must be met within 24 hours of the scheduled class. Classes that do not meet the minimum quota will be canceled.
